Sustainable development is the key to economic growth of the city, Municipal Commissioner K. Sudhakar has said.

Mr. Sudhakar has attended ICLEI World Congress at Belo Horizonte, Brazil where more than 1,400 civic heads around the world discussed strategies to various global challenges emerging out of rapid urbanization, environmental degradation and population growth.

The Guntur Municipal Corporation, being a member of ICLEI, a body of local governments for sustainability, been implementing various green projects.

The ICLEI world Congress is closely linked to the UN Rio+20 conference. The Commissioner along with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Special Commissioner, U.T Krishna Babu attended the conference held at Rio. India was represented by a high level delegation led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“Holistic development of city is essential. We will try and develop the new colonies without degrading the environment.

The civic body will provide infrastructure much before construction begins in extension colonies,” the Commissioner said.

He also pointed out that water supply as the most important service and stressed the need to augment the quality of water supply.

The Service Level Benchmarks (SLB) which measured the quality of water supply and distribution has been lowly ranked in case of GMC.
