Inflows to Krishna river system drops

August 22, 2014 12:47 am | Updated 12:47 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The cumulative inflows into the Krishna river have dropped to around 50,000 cusecs on Thursday. While the inflow to Almatti Dam that is brimming is 25,400 cusecs, the same to Tungabhadra reservoir, which is also full, is 24,600 cusecs.

While the reservoirs in Karnataka are filled to the brim, major reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh still have less water than to their full capacities.

The Srisailam Reservoir can hold another 50 tmcft of water, while Nagarjunasagar can hold another 125 tmcft. Given the present inflows, it would take another 175 days for the two reservoirs to be filled to their capacities.

Out of the 16,000 cusecs of water being received by the head pond of Prakasam Barrage, nearly 10,000 cusecs are being released to the Krishna Eastern Main Canal that irrigates the delta area in Krishna and West Godavari district.

Water allocation

Further,6,000 cusecs of water are being released into the Krishna Western Main Canal that ensures irrigation in Guntur and Prakasam districts.

The remaining 135 cusecs of water are being released to Guntur Channel that supplies drinking water to Guntur city.
