Several school buildings have been damaged following incessant rains for the last one week. The structures have become weak and are leaking.
Deputy Education Officers and headmasters have announced holidays for two days for government, aided, mandal and zilla parishad schools as transportation remains cut off to many villages in the rural areas. Playgrounds have turned into pools in many schools.
Collector S. Suresh Kumar has directed the officials not to conduct classes in school buildings that are in a poor condition. District Education Officer D. Anjaneyulu has visited a few schools in the rural areas. He has instructions the headmasters to lock the dilapidated structures to prevent any untoward incident. In all, 3,000 Mandal Parishad and Zilla Parishad, 17 government, 320 municipal, and 380 aided schools are running in the district, and almost all the schools are functioning in own buildings.
Speaking to The Hindu , V. Ramakrishna, a villager of Lemalle in Amaravathi mandal, said the Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School building in the village was in bad condition and its roof leaking. “Compound walls and roofs of many schools are in dilapidated condition, posing a threat to the lives of children. Officials should check the structural soundness of each building before conducting classes,” said a village elder P. Venkateswarlu.
