One of them was planned by a member of the Anti-Child Marriage Committee!
For personnel of the ICDS, Tuesday was hectic, as they go from one place to another to prevent not one child marriage but four, one of which being planned by a member of the Anti-Child Marriage Committee!
Krishna District Women Development and Child Welfare Project Director N.V. Raghava Rao said Dinni Radhika, a DWCRA group leader and member of the Anti-Child Marriage Committee constituted by the ICDS, got her 13-year-old daughter engaged to a boy and was preparing to perform the marriage in a couple of days.
The ICDS staff visited Radhika’s house located at Vasavi Nagar in the town and tried to counsel her. But, Radhika picked up a quarrel and refused to stop the marriage to be performed in a couple of days.
“We constituted committees with Village Secretary, Village Revenue Officer, school teachers, DWCRA group leaders, and ANMs in village to enlighten people against performing child marriages. What shocked us is a committee member herself preparing to perform the marriage of her minor daughter. We will take it to the notice of DRDA Project Director,” Mr. Raghava Rao said.
The officials also prevented three other child marriages at Cheruvu Centre and Lingavaram Road in Nagavarappadu village. In one case, the ICDS supervisors caught the girl while her parents managed to escape. In another case, the relatives locked the house and escaped.
The staff counselled the parents and took an undertaking that they would perform their daughter’s marriage after she attained 18 years in the fourth case, said the Project Director.
