Women's hostels in Krishna district have come under scanner following allegations of illegal activities in some hostels. The Police and the Women Development and Child Welfare Department officials are inquiring into the reports about some students being involved in the illegal activities at a private institution located at Atkur village in Ungurutu mandal in the district.
The police subsequently sealed three women's hostels in Pottipadu and Atkur villages on Friday. ACP (East) V.Geetha Devi sealed the hostels and was checking the whereabouts of the students who reportedly went home for summer holidays.
The student unions staged a dharna in front of the college demanding action against the college management.
Leaders of CPI (M) and CPI and the women's associations visited the institution and demanded a thorough enquiry into the allegations.
According to sources, an NGO has been running the private vocational junior college at Atkur for the past three years.
About 150 students are studying in the college and the management is running two hostels—one in the same village and another in nearby Pottipadu. It is said that three students of the college reportedly went missing a few days ago.
The police are looking into these reports also.
Women Development and Child Welfare Project Director V. Swaroopa Rani visited the college and verified the attendance registers and other documents in the institution. She lodged a complaint with the police seeking a thorough probe into the allegations.
Following the complaint, City Police Commissioner N. Madhusudhan Reddy ordered ACP Geetha Devi to make a thorough inquiry.
Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Swaroopa Rani said the CDPOs visited the college and collected the student's strength particulars, addresses of girl students, and the hostel inmates details from the management.
