The Congress government is destroying the local bodies in the State by not holding elections in time and trying to abolish MPTCs and ZPTCs too in the name of reducing the number of tiers in the system, CPI(M) State Committee secretary B.V. Raghavalu has said.
At the inaugural of M. Basava Punnaiah Memorial Study Centre in the city by party Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday, Mr. Raghavalu took exception to the proposed constitution of the Second States Reorganisation Commission.
“Second SRC is no solution to the Telangana imbroglio. It would open a Pandora's box, as similar demands would be put forth in other States,” he opined.
He demanded holding of elections to local bodies immediate with either direct or indirect election of Mayor and chairperson. He demanded that an all-party meeting be convened at the earliest to discuss the issue.
Taking exception to the scope for horse-trading during the no-confidence motion in the Assembly, he said discussion on the motion should have been taken up on day one itself.
The spat between Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababau Naidu and Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on the Floor of the Assembly was unfortunate as it lowered the dignity of the House, Mr. Raghavulu said.
Dwelling on the purpose of opening the study centre, he said it was an effort to reform the society. It would run on the lines of Sundarayya Bhavan in Hyderabad and promote scientific temper.
Rare books
The study centre would also be equipped with books and some of the rare ones would be preserved here, he added. A library was formally opened in the old Prajasakati office as a mark of the beginning of the study centre.
Mr. Sitaram Yechury and Mr. Raghavalu recalled the contribution of Basava Punnayya to the Communist movement worldwide. Party central committee member P. Madhu and State committee member Y. Venkateswara Rao were present.
