‘Help check spread of vector-borne diseases'

July 25, 2011 11:46 am | Updated 11:46 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has asked people to cooperate with officials in the proper implementation of anti-larval measures with a view to checking the spread of vector-borne diseases.

Municipal Assistant Chief Medical Officer Z. Srinivasa Rao said the corporation had embarked on measures such as removing stockpiled garbage from vacant lands and spraying larvicides. He appealed to the citizens to keep their surroundings clean and inform the VMC in case they found any place untidy.

At Machavaram, the officials used boats and removed palmera leaves from the water and sprayed larvicides such as ‘Primiphos Methyl' to ensure the water pool did not turn into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Malaria inspector Ashok Prabhu and sanitation inspector Saleem participated in the day-long activity on Sunday. The corporation launched a toll-free number ‘1800 425 2000' to register fever cases. The number could be contacted for anti-larval measures too.
