The safe driving awareness drive in the city got a boost with District Collector Kona Sasidhar launching a motorcycle rally after Guntur Urban Police launching No Helmet-No Fuel rule recently.

``I strongly support the use of helmets because it is only way to ensure protection of life in road accidents. A head injury caused in a road accident is always fatal and the impact of the crash is so severe, that even if the driver is cruising at a speed of 50 km per hour, the intensity is such that if feels like one has fallen from a fourth floor of building,’’ Mr. Sasidhar said.

Mr. Sasidhar took some time off from the weekly grievance programme to launch the rally along with Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Ch. Vijaya Rao in front of Collector’s office.

Wearing a helmet, Mr. Sasidhar rode a Bullet with Mr. Vijaya Rao in the pillon. Deputy Superintendents of Police, Inspectors of Police, Sub Inspectors followed them. Over 300 police personnel took part in the rally.

``The Guntur Urban Police have been raising awareness on safe driving for a month and recently, the Chief Minister has instructed to implement the ``No Helmet-No Fuel’’ rule. We urge the people, more so youngsters, who are used to drive fast to wear helmets to guarantee safety to their lives,’’ Mr. Vijaya Rao said.

The helmet rule has been implemented in the past with limited success in various cities. but with the recent order of linking wearing of helmets with petrol, the Guntur Urban Police hope that the people would finally fall in line.
