Heavy rains batter State

Many places in Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) received copious rains on Thursday due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal and heavy rains are forecast at a few places in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra on Thursday.

Normal life was particularly affected in East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam, Visakhapatnam and West Godavari districts as rains started pouring from the early hours of Wednesday. The weather remained inclement through the night and the district Collectors had been asked to be prepared for any contingency.

Vijayawada city was drenched by rain from the morning and officials sounded an alert across the district. Machilipatnam and other towns too received heavy rain .

Low-lying areas inundated

Life was thrown out of gear in Srikakulam district on Wednesday afternoon and people confined themselves to their homes.

There was heavy rain in Srikakulam town and low-lying areas were inundated. So far, the district received 587 mm rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 640.3 mm.

Visakhapatnam city and other parts of the district received heavy rain as the southwest monsoon got activated during the last couple of days. The low pressure too played its role in the wet spell that badly affected the tribal areas.

Incessant rain was reported from Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Ravulapalem and other mandals in the Konaseema area in East Godavari district. Tanuku, Undrajavaram, Iragavaram and Attili mandals in West Godavari district received heavy rains causing power supply disruptions at various places.

The district headquarters Eluru was also battered by rain.

There was heavy rain in Kurnool, Prakasam and Nellore districts with the Somasila reservoir in Nellore district receiving heavy inflows . The government had instructed the district officials to watch out for any flooding as the weather had been predicted to be rough for the next one to two days.

District Collectors have been asked to be prepared for any contingency
