HC Bench: Opposition parties join lawyers' stir

January 13, 2011 08:26 pm | Updated 08:26 pm IST - ONGOLE:

Over a 100 lawyers joined by leaders and activists of opposition parties observed relay fast for the 100th day on Thursday urging the State government to set up a Bench of the High Court in the coastal Andhra region.

Leaders of the main opposition TDP, CPI, CPI(M), PRP and the BJP as also various civic organisations, including the Andhra Pradesh Praja Natya Mandali, sat on fast in-front of the district courts complex to express solidarity with the striking lawyers.

The advocates, led by Bar Association secretary S Sivaramakrishna Prasad raised slogans against the Congress Government for turning a blind eye to their demand for so long.

It was unfair to link their demand with the statehood issue, they argued, adding that now that the Srikrishna Committee had submitted its report, it should not come in the way of conceding their demand in the interest of the litigant public.

Members of the Non-Gazetted Officers Association Joint Action Committee led by Prakasam District Chairman Sheik Abdul Basheer also joined the protest.
