People of this region can look forward to a boat ride in Krishna River akin to a trip to Papikondalu, located on a section of Godavari River, if plans of the Department of Archaeology and Museums to develop Gudimetla village in Nandigama as a major tourism destination fructify.
Besides enjoying a boat ride in Krishna River, a visit to ancient temples atop two hills in the village will be part of the package. “It’s an excellent place to attract tourists. It can be transformed into a major tourist destination by providing basic amenities there,” said a senior department official.
The other side of the river is Thullur, where the new capital of the State is coming up. Access to both the places can be improved by constructing a connecting bridge, the official said, adding that currently, there is no proper transport facility and villages depend on country boats to shuttle between Thullur and Gudimetla.“It’s just 60-km drive from Vijayawada and people can visit the place during weekends and holidays with their families,” the official explained. Two ancient temples of Sri Someswara Swamy and Sri Venkateswara Swamy atop the twin hillocks abutting Krishna River is another advantage for tourism development. Tourists can get a panoramic view of the upcoming capital from these temples, he said. According to him, there are 18 other temples of deities such as Bhairava’, ‘Anjaneya’, ‘Srirama’, ‘Sri Venkateswara’, ‘Sri Parameswara’, ‘Swayambu Linga’ and the village deity ‘Ankalamma’ near Sri Someswara Swamy temple. Plans have also been chalked out to refurbish the temples for Krishna Pushkarams to be held in 2016. When contacted, Museums Assistant Director S. Bangaraiah said a proposal to develop Gudimetla village was already sent to the Government and response was awaited.
