Deputy Mayor S.P. Gritton on Wednesday came down heavily on the Left parties for their agitation seeking the government to solve people's problems.

Mr. Gritton said that the CPI and the CPI (M) were taking up agitations with an eye on local body elections. “Their agitations are seasonal politics and gimmicks to harvest votes in the ensuing elections. They should have held parleys with the Municipal Commissioner or the ruling Congress if they are sincere in solving the public grievances,” he said.

‘Unparalleled progress'

No other political party took up developmental works that were implemented during the last five years. The city was showered with huge funds under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) programme. Hundreds of crores of rupees were spent on drinking water, underground drainage, roads and housing.

Works of a value of Rs.70.05 crores were taken up in divisions represented by the CPI, while Rs. 54.94 crores works were taken up in divisions represented by the CPI (M). A staggering amount of Rs. 124.99 crores was spent in 14 divisions of the CPI and the CPI (M). The Congress achieved unparallel development and progress in the city, and these parties would never match the Congress, he added.
