Tapping solar energy to the maximum extent in public utilities, scientific disposal of solid waste, improving quality of drinking water and clean environment will continue to be the focal areas of the civic body, Municipal Commissioner K. Sudhakar said here on Tuesday.

Making a Power-Point presentation at the final local event of, “Realising DReAMS (Development of Resources and Access to Municipal Services),” a project funded by the European Union in select cities across the world, Mr. Sudhakar outlined six key areas in which the GMC has been trying to make qualitative improvements. The project is a continuation of ecoBudget project initiated in 2004 by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, funded by European Union. The GMC has been sharing the expertise of select urban bodies across the world in making improvements in the delivery systems and protection of environment.

The Commissioner went on to say that the town would have a quality testing lab to test water and food samples. The quality of drinking water was being monitored by taking into count 14 parameters. Samples were being sent to GGH quality testing lab.

Ground water levels were being replenished by improving the existing water tanks at Gujjangundla, Koretipadu, Brindvan Gardens and Nallacheruvu.Energy conservation was also being given the top priority and the GMC has already tapping solar energy by installing solar lights in five parks and 340 LED lights on the main roads. Solar energy was being used on all LT lines at the 13 service reservoirs.
