CPI (M) Central Committee member Tammineni Veerabhadram has charged the State government with imposing cuts on welfare schemes and failing to secure adequate funds from the Central government for the State.
Speaking at the district plenum of the party held at Manchikanti Bhavan here on Wednesday, Mr. Veerabhadram alleged that the government cut the subsidies meant for the poor and spared the affluent sections from the reductions in the subsidies earmarked for the latter as part of a World Bank dictated policy. “As a result, the wealthy sections are enjoying the subsidies to the tune of Rs. 4 lakh crores without any interruption while the poor sections are reeling under miserable conditions,” he charged, and accused the Congress leadership in the State of failing to exert pressure on the Centre to obtain requisite funds.
“The party cadres should prepare themselves to wage several more agitations on the lines of those organised in the recent past to make the government wake up from slumber and safeguard the interests of the poor,” he said.
CPI (M) district secretary P. Sudarshan Rao said that the party had organised indefinite hunger strikes in 38 mandals on various issues to highlight the problems confronted by the poor and other disadvantaged sections. The party would take up agitations on people's issues with renewed vigour, he said.
Party senior leader S. Rajaiah presided over the meeting. Party district secretariat members P. Venkateshwara Rao, B. Ravi Kumar and others spoke.
