Ahead of the Krishna pushkarams, the Gannavaram airport will have sixteen parking bays by the end of June. At present, there are six parking bays at the airport. The Gannavaram airport authorities are expecting that new parking bays will be used for chartered flights coming for the river jamboree.
The Ganavaram airport terminal building expansion will be completed by August this year. The authorities are also proposing a business lounge with a space of 3,000 sq. metres.
The existing terminal building will be used for international flights. The airport authorities are holding discussions with Customs and Immigration authorities for international terminal.
However, the existing facilities at the airport are not sufficient for operation of international flights from the airport.
Category VII safety standards are required for it, while the airport is equipped with category VI facilities.
The proposal to expand the runway up to 10,000 feet is likely to be reality only after two years. The government is yet to hand over the land required for it. The government has issued a land acquisition notification also. It will take two years at least to construct the 10,000 feet runway. And, runway of this kind is necessary for landing of airbus etc.
The international airline operators are not keen on restricted load penalty operations in view of less commercial viability.
Notwithstanding, Gannavaram airport Director G. Madhusudhana Rao will make a presentation on upcoming travel and tourism fair at Visakhapatnam on March 26. “I request the airline operators such as Silk Air and Air Asia to operate at least a flight from Vijayawada to international destinations,” he said. The passenger traffic improved considerably at the Gannavaram airport. The flight movement is a mere 2,797 in 2010-11. It has touched 7,596 in 2015-16. It is 41 per cent increase compared to last year (2014-15) which was 5,386. The passenger movement also increased to 3,96 lakh in 2015-16 from 77,131 in 2010-11.
