May 01, 2014 11:26 pm | Updated 11:40 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the Vijayawada East constituency Sk. Abdullah has said that solving the drinking water woes in the city tops the poll agenda of the party.

Speaking to media after releasing the party manifesto for the Vijayawada East segment, Mr. Abdullah said free supply of potable water would be a thrust area. He would strive for solving the water woes in the constituency, if he was voted to power, he said.

He said that the party would bring pressure on the local municipal authorities to set up an underground drainage system to ensure clean and healthy surroundings. Construction of a retaining wall at Krishnalanka to prevent submersion of the low-lying areas during floods, a flyover at Benz Circle to overcome traffic congestion, sanctioning house sites or houses to families below poverty line, immediate and effective measures to ensure protection to women and provision of a toll-free number for people to register their problems included in the manifesto.

Transparent administration

In contrast to other parties making tall promises, the AAP is going ahead with a manifesto that reflects longstanding problems of the common man, he said and promised to usher in a clean, transparent and accountable government, besides participatory planning and decentralisation. Strengthening of health and education sectors by improving infrastructure, revival of agriculture and rural economy paving way for income security to farmers and initiating effective measures for industrial growth were the other priority areas of the party. Development plank

Expressing serious concern over the long pending projects that have failed to make headway, the manifesto spoke of the need to turn attention to completion of the proposed Machilipatnam port project to generate more employment . The party also has in its agenda development of IT industry in and around Vijayawada. Airport expansion and development, a super-speciality hospital for Vijayawada, a flyover near Kanaka Durga temple and a metro rail plan in the days to come also found place in the party’s agenda.

AAP’s Vijayawada Lok Sabha candidate Harmohinder Singh Sahani and others were also present.
