Five check posts soon on A.P.- ‘T’ border

Initiative gathers steam, with the Appointed Day for Telangana fast approaching

April 10, 2014 12:10 am | Updated June 04, 2016 02:45 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

With the Appointed Day for the creation of Telangana fast approaching, the Transport Department has identified five new locations for setting up check posts on the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border.

Of the five check posts, two will come up at Tiruvuru and Garikapadu (bordering Khammam and Nalgonda) in Krishna district, two at Dachepalli and Macherla (bordering Nalgonda) in Guntur district and one at Jangareddygudem (bordering Khammam) in West Godavari district.

The authorities stationed at these check posts will inspect vehicle documents, besides verifying payment of road tax and issuing local travel permits for short duration to tourist buses and cabs.

As of now, there are five integrated check posts: Purushothapuram in Srikakulam district, Naraharipet in West Godavari, B.V. Palem in Nellore, Salura in Nizamabad and Adilabad district on the Maharashtra border. These check posts are manned by personnel from Commercial Taxes, Excise, Transport, Forests and Civil Supplies Departments.

In addition, there are 12 exclusive Transport Department check posts at different locations to regulate movement of vehicles. Now, with the formation of Telangana, there is a need for at least five more check posts, as vehicles from the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh will now be considered as other State vehicles, explains a senior Transport Department official.

The department has said that each check post requires one Supervisor Motor Vehicle Inspector, three Motor Vehicle Inspectors and six constables to check vehicles. Check posts aid in curbing illegal transportation of goods, besides contributing to revenue collection through the issue of local permits and verification of entry tax, he says.

“A team of senior officials from Hyderabad and other places will shortly examine these locations and conduct a feasibility study. Once approved, the check posts will come up soon after the Appointed Day,” he adds.
