July 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

A retired postmaster M. Sitaramaiah, resident of Kothamajeru village of Challapalli mandal in Krishna died while undergoing treatment for fever at a private hospital in the city on Sunday. For the last several days, many residents in the village have been complaining of fever and on Sunday when a private hospital conducted a health camp 23 persons were reported to be suffering with fever.

Following this, the district medical and health office also conducted a health camp in the village. Many residents are complaining of body pains and fever and going by the symptoms, it could be viral fever, said DMHO N. Nagamalleswari.

It is mainly due to water contamination in the village river.

The Kothamajeru panchayat river is the only drinking water source in the village and out of suspicion, samples were sent to Regional Sample Centre at Medical College in Vijayawada and it was confirmed that water was contaminated with bacteria, she said.

“Villagers have been instructed not to drink water from the river. We will continue the health camp” said Ms. Nagamalleswari.
