The auspicious month, `Karthika Masam,’ began on Friday with the faithful taking to fasting during the time of rituals. A tradition that is prevalent in many cultures and religions, fasting is a natural process adapted by living creatures to clean the body, rejuvenates the digestive system, excretory system and a self controlled system to relieve the body of discomfort, pain and disease. The process of restraining and controlling the sensorial experience of eating is also a way to come nearer to God and stay focused.

Classical Hata Yoga trainer Srividya Tharaknath has now come out with a fresh Yogic perspective supplemented by science on fasting and gives several tips to those who fast during the holy month.

“Do not fast unless you are prepared physically and mentally. Prepare the body for this process by eating a balanced food. Reduce the intake of food gradually as you near the fasting period. There are Yogic methods to support the body and the mind during fasting. Avoid consuming coffee, alcohol and all kinds of nervous stimulants,” says Dr. Vidya.

Drawing her experiences with Hata Yoga, Dr. Vidya says that fasting gives one an opportunity to pause, reflect and start afresh with life. Each meal after fasting is a celebration and one becomes conscious about what they eat. A session of Yoga before fasting gives positive energy and helps them to sustain.

“Fasting helps one to appreciate the other dimensions in one’s personality and gives an opportunity to pause, reflect and gives a fresh perspective to life,’’ Dr. Vidya says.

Fasting has proved to be perfect antidote to several disorders. By cutting down the daily intake of food by nearly half for two out of seven days, has shown beneficial effects on brain and helps in fighting Alzheimer and Parkinson’s diseases, apart from cutting down risks of heart diseases and diabetes and reduces the side effects in chemotherapy. Scientific studies have proven that fasting triggers stem cell regeneration and improves immunity.
