Following fierce criticism from all quarters following the death by drowning of an eight-year-old boy in the Sir Vizzi swimming pool on April 10, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has been advised to deploy at least two experienced life guards at each swimming pool, besides ensuring other safety mechanisms.

After conducting an inspection, VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian had constituted an expert panel and wanted it to submit a report on the measures to be taken to ensure the safety of trainees. The committee suggested that nets be arranged in the pools to prevent young and fresh trainees from entering deep areas, besides provision of four inflated airbags and motorcar tubes.

They also suggested that in case of more demand, coaching be conducted in different batches. Meanwhile, VMC officials, along with experts, inspected swimming pools at Gurunanak Colony, Gandhinagar and One Town on Saturday and submitted a report to the VMC Commissioner.

Parents of wards attending coaching at Sir Vizzi swimming pool had alleged that negligence of VMC authorities had caused the death of the boy, T. Manish Kumar.
