Raavi Venkata Ramana, former MLA and YSRC candidate from Ponnur, who is in judicial remand for allegedly hoarding spurious liquor, now faces serious criminal charges including rash and negligent action causing death and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Senior district officials, who took a serious view of the large scale seizure of spurious liquor stored in the godown just days before polling, said that the charges under 304 and 304 (A) IPC were being registered against Mr. Ramana Rao.

Adulterated

The cases were being registered after the Excise Department had sent samples of the seized liquor for chemical tests which confirmed that the liquor was unfit for consumption and the contents were adulterated.

The former MLA was arrested in the evening on May 7 and sent to judicial remand. Citing health reasons, Ramana was moved to GGH.

In a raid held on April 26, the excise officials seized 508 cases containing 23,480 liquor bottles from the premises of a textile mill at Marripalem village of Yadlapadu mandal. They registered cases under 34 (A) of Excise Act, but Ramana had a reprieve after the High Court stayed the arrest till the completion of polling.
