Groundwater Resources Department Assistant Director Ram Prasad on Wednesday said an essay-writing competition on water saving, management, and its importance would be held for school students of classes 8, 9, and 10 on October 31 commemorating “Jalam Badi,” a programme to bring awareness among public on water management.
Speaking at the awareness programme held at Sisu Vidya Mandir here under the supervision of District Education Officer Srinivas Reddy, Mr. Prasad said students should be made to realise the importance of rainwater harvesting and the concerns of depleting groundwater resources.
“We are supposed to utilise 30 per cent of the underground water resources, but we are using more than 70 per cent. The resources are fast- depleting, thus necessitating the importance of rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting is accumulating and storing of rainwater for reuse such as water for livestock and water for irrigation and other uses,” he added.
He asked teachers to inform students about essay-writing competition for one or two days during their respective assembly gathering. “The school management should depute a teacher for the successful conduct of the competition. Twenty marks are allotted and the top three students will be given certificates by the district Collector,” he added.
Competitions in drawing and quiz would also be held along with essay-writing for schools in Vijayawada city. “Students should write the essay in not more than two sheets (A4 size) and each sheet should contain at least 16 words. Each school should send at least 10 students for the competition. By conducting the programme (essay writing) on same day over 2 lakh students in the district will acquire awareness on the importance of water management,” he pointed out.
