Equip students with soft skills, teachers told

Former Kakatiya University Professor G. Ramesh says too much emphasis on knowledge-based curriculum transaction will have an adverse impact on children

June 03, 2014 11:18 pm | Updated 11:18 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

“The present day teaching process lays emphasis only on the cognitive domain,” said Swarna Padmanabhaiah, former Professor of Education from Sri Venkateswara University, on Tuesday.

Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day workshop for school teachers held at KCP Siddhartha School, Kanuru, Prof. Padmanabhaiah said: “Education is for life. School education should prepare the students to face life with confidence. The focus of the teacher should be on equipping the students with necessary life skills and soft skills along with providing knowledge.”

He doled out liberal tips to teachers on how to incorporate activities designed for developing the affective and psycho motor domains of a child’s learning.

Former Kakatiya University Professor G. Ramesh said too much of emphasis on knowledge-based curriculum transaction with least emphasis on acquiring skills had an adverse impact on children when they grew up. “Technology is now an integral part of teaching and teachers who cannot handle it with ease in a classroom will become irrelevant in the 21 century education system,” he warned. President of Siddhartha Academy Nalluri Venkateswarlu, convenor of the school S. Rama Krishna and chief administrative officer of the Academy Chakradhara Rao were present.
