Andhra Pradesh Chess Association (APCA) and Global Chess Academy on Saturday felicitated city chess player K.V.K. Karthik, who went on to clinch the No. 1 slot in the first physically challenged national chess championship at Tiruchirapalli recently.
The 28-year-old player down by an acute orthopaedic problem hauled six points out of seven rounds. He was also awarded the Fide Master by the world federation for his exploits. Speaking at the function as chief guest, Commissioner of Customs Sk. Khader Rehman asked the young players to emulate Karthik. Academy president K. Rajendra recollected the efforts of Karthik during his formative years.
APCA secretary D. Srihari said that right age for players to start playing chess was between seven and eleven. He also assured all help from the association side. Management of VVIT College has facilitated Karthik with a purse of Rs. 10,000 cash award.
