Early detection will help cure cancer, says expert

Early detection will help cure cancer, said Chigurupati Mohana Vamsy, chief surgical oncologist at Hyderabad-based Omega Hospitals on Sunday.

Delivering a talk on cancer as part of an awareness programme conducted by the city-based Power Mech Foundation, Dr. Vamsy said cancer was a dreaded disease which triggered panic. “My father stopped talking to me when he came to know that I was keen on pursuing oncology as a specialisation,” he said. Reiterating that cancer was curable, he cited examples of cancer survivors such as Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, former US President Ronald Reagan, and celebrity pop diva Kylie Minogue, who had battled breast cancer. Elaborating the natural history of cancer, he said a person could be afflicted by it mainly due to two reasons – either genetic or because of environmental factors. Explaining through a power-point presentation about how the cancer tissue spread through the blood stream and through the lymphatic system, he said certain changes, internal or external, if taken to the doctor’s notice in time, could help a long way in checking further spread of the disease. Senior journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao, managing trustee of the Foundation S. Kishore Babu, and chairperson S. Lakshmi were present.
