Women’s Commission Chairperson Tripurana Venkata Ratnam has appealed to couples not to go for criminal cases and arrests, which, she says will spoil Indian culture.

Arrest should be the last resort and the couples should go for a compromise for their children, elders and well-being of the society, she reiterated. “Police should give enough time for reconciliation and not ill-treat them in the station.” The commission chairperson said it was not correct to find fault with men only and counselling should be given for both wife and husband.

A group of officers including Sub-Collector S. Nagalakshmi, Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) Regional Joint Director and Krishna District Project Director K. Krishna Kumari, Collector M. Raghunandan Rao, Child Welfare Committee Chairman B. Nagesh Rao and Additional Superintendent of Police Sagar discussed at length on increasing crimes against women.

The women panel chief said with women groups, advocates, mediators were going for more and more police cases. In such instances, chances were bleak for reunion and the ultimate sufferers were the women and children. The increasing disputes between young couples were causing harm to the family culture, which was not a good sign, she said.

Mr. Raghunandan Rao has called upon people to fight against women discrimination. About 30 per cent of domestic violence and family dispute cases were being filed during ‘Prajavani’ (Grievances Day) at Machilipatnam Collectorate on every Monday, he said.

When Ms. Krishna Kumari sought corpus fund for providing financial aid to the victims of harassment, the Collector asked her to submit proposals. He urged the victims to contact Women Helpline No.1091, in emergency.
