The Krishna district administration will convene a meeting with quarry owners in the district to discuss the model design of the houses for those working in quarries, according to District Collector Peeyush Kumar.
Mr. Kumar on Saturday inspected the quarries in Gaddamanugu in G. Kondur mandal of the district. On the occasion, he warned the quarry owners of cancellation of licences if requisite facilities were not provided to workers.
The quarry owners should provide pucca houses with all facilities like power and drinking water.
There were 300 quarries in the district and 20,000 workers were working in them. Many families from Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Karnataka migrated to these quarries for eking out a livelihood, he said.
Stating that the schools were functioning in various quarry colonies under Bala Karmika Vidyalaya Pathakam, he said that schools would be opened in all quarry colonies where there were no schools. Tamil, Oriya and Kannada teachers would be recruited to teach these students, he said, adding that necessary steps would be taken to extend insurance facilities to quarry workers.
The Collector suggested that medical camps should be organised with the help of NGOs, where necessary medicines should be distributed to the workers in need.
Vijayawada Sub-Collector Dharma Reddy, Assistant Director of Mines Sudhakar, Deputy Commissioner of Labour Yousuf Sheik, NCLP Project Director K. Siva Sankar, ICDS Project Director K. Suhasini Devi, DMHO Prasada Rao, SSA Project Director A. Krishna Rao and others were present.
