Director-General of Police K. Aravinda Rao has ruled out the use of firearms by police in controlling mobs during agitations. He told reporters on the premises of the Andhra Pradesh Special Force (APSP) 6th Battalion here that strict instructions had been given to the Superintendents of Police to use only non-lethal fire arms in combating mob fury during agitations.
“We will ensure that any sort of police action will not result in causalities,'' Mr. Rao said after inaugurating a modern firing range established on the premises of the battalion. The firing range built on 300 square yards would cater to the needs of police in Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam and West Godavari districts.
Referring to incidents of firing at Kakarapalli in Srikakulum district which claimed the lives of two persons, the DGP regretted the firing and added that victims could have come in close firing range.
When reporters questioned about the main accused in the murder of G. Suryanarayana (Suri) not yet being nabbed, the DGP said that the accused had been on the run for many days and hoped that the police would nab them soon.
Inspector-General of Police (APSP) A.B. Venkateswara Rao, Guntur Range I.G Harish Kumar Gupta, Vijayawada Commissioner of Police Amit Garg and DSP (Rural) Annapurna Reddy were present.
