The losses to agriculture and allied sectors in Krishna district were much higher then what were projected by the district administration, Telugu Desam MP and MLAs have said.

In an interaction session to the inter-ministerial Central team which came to assess the damage caused by the heavy rain caused by ‘Nilam’ cyclone, Mylavaram MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said that the damage to agriculture and allied sectors was ten times what the district administration had submitted to the team.

In a memorandum to the team Mr Umamaheswara Rao said that the district administration failed to asses the damage correctly.

Ninety per cent of the paddy, cotton, groundnut, turmeric, sugarcane, chilli and vegetables that were in the fields were damaged, he said. Even the floriculture was affected badly, he said.

The MLA urged the central team to declare ‘Nilam’ cyclone as a national calamity and release relief accordingly. Nandigama MLA Tangirala Prabhakar tried to explain the plight of the farmers. Pamarru MLA D.Y.Das said no relief was being given to tenant farmers and urged the team to make special recommendations to ensure that they were also covered.

Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu said that the houses of people living in his constituency were damaged when they were inundated by the flood waters of Budamerru.
