Following the death of the 23-year-old gangrape victim at a hospital in Singapore in the wee hours on Saturday, students and women organisations came on to the roads and conveyed condolence at several places in Krishna district.
Scores of students led by All India Youth Federation, mahila sanghams, student organisations, NGOs and the public condoled the death of the para-medical student, who battled for life about for 12 days after the brutal incident.
The protestors organised rallies, human chains, candle rallies and offered prayers. Police tightened security at all major junctions to prevent any untoward incidents in the city and other places in the district.
At Lenin Centre, activists of CPI and its affiliated organisations formed a human chain and expressed grief over the death of the girl. They shouted slogans demanding that the court award capital punishment to the accused who resorted to the heinous crime.
Mahila Samakya State president P. Durga Bhavani said the inhuman act reflects the poor security for women in society. She criticised the public representatives for making degrading remarks against the women, after the incident.
Members of Stree Vimukthi Sanghatana of Andhra Pradesh, All India Youth Federation (AIYF) and other organisations conducted protest programmes. The protestors said women were moving on roads with fear in cities and the government has failed to curb such incidents.
Women raised slogans demanding that the government take steps to stop screening of obscene films and television serials to prevent recurrence of rapes and atrocities against women.
CPI district secretary A. Vanaja, leaders D. Shankar, and V. Nageswara Rao, AIYF state president N. Sambasiva Rao, Stree Vimukthi Sanghatana State president C. Vijaya and others participated in the protests.
Students of various educational institutions took to the streets demanding death penalty to those accused in the gang-rape. Students owing allegiance to the All India Students’ Federation took a rally from the Government Women’s College in protest against the gruesome incident.
AISF district president M. Subba Rao and secretary Ayyaswamy strongly condemned the failure of police in curbing atrocities in the national capital and demanded that sincere efforts should be made at least from now to instil a sense of security among women.
The rape of the 23-year-old para-medical student was an assault on women in general and the culprits should be punished severely.
Girl students of Vignan University’s Women’s Welfare & Protection Cell staged a protest outside the University premises. A large number of students of SIMS Group of Institutions formed a human chain at Mt. Teresa statue denouncing the heinous crime.
