The city unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched 15-day chaitanya yatra demanding that the Government resolve several public issues.
CPI(M) State secretariat member Y. Venkateswara Rao flagged off the yatra at Prakash Nagar here on Sunday. On the occasion, he came down heavily on the State Government alleging that it was turning every service into a money-spinner.
The Government did not spare the garbage as well. The people would have to cough up heavy amounts for drinking water, and user fee for lifting the garbage. The parks, only recreation in the city, were also not within reach of commoner as the Corporation was collecting heavy entry fee, he said.
The Congress Government had forgotten the promises made to people. Elected representatives were busy in their businesses, and find no time to attend the public grievances. Key issues and problems such as issuance of pattas, white ration cards, restoration of kerosene supply and drinking water through pipeline to Krishnalanka area remained unattended to, he pointed out.
CPI(M) district secretary V. Umamaheswara Rao alleged that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation had utterly failed in controlling the mosquito menace. It resulted in serious health hazard as the number of people falling victim to malaria and dengue was on the rise. The elected representatives and officials were saying that mosquito nets were distributed last year, and not taking any concrete measures to control mosquitoes and diseases, he said.
While 1.47 lakh people were eagerly waiting for houses, none of them were provided shelter. The Deepam gas scheme was also grossly misutilised as the connections were provided only to followers of Congress leaders, he alleged. As there was no vision, the city witnessed improper development. The roads turned into water pools even if it drizzled, he added. CPI(M) State committee member Ch. Babu Rao was also present.
