The Communist Party of India-Marxist has demanded Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to convene an all-party meeting on hike in water and Under Ground Drainage charges.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao said that the corporation steeply hiked the water charges when the elected body was not there and violated the constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights with its moves.

The corporation has also not solicited opinions, suggestions and objections on the proposals to hike the tariff. The hike would deprive the people of their right to safe drinking water. The hikes imposed a burden of nearly Rs.30 crore on the people who were already reeling under the impact of inflation. The hike touched 400 per cent and the poor were the worst sufferers as they would not be able buy water at such exorbitant rate, he said. The VMC was issuing notices with revised water tariff compelling the people to pay abnormal charges, Mr. Babu Rao said, adding, the VMC should convene a meeting with all political parties and people organisations and seek their suggestions.

Meanwhile, People for India launched a signature campaign demanding roll back of hike in water charges. The volunteers of People for India asked the people to endorse the campaign by signing on the canvas put up by their outfit at places like Lenin Centre, Benz Circle and Sivaji Cafe. Insurance employees took part in the campaign.

IMA president Indla Ramasubba Reddy kicked started the campaign at Sivaji Cafe, while State Bar Council member Rajendra Prasad launched at Lenin Centre.People for India convener N. Patrudu co convener J.V.L.N. Murthy and others were present.
