The Communist Party of India (CPI) city unit has staged a dharna at Labour Colony here demanding the RTC management to level the land owned by it near the Labour Colony.
The CPI city assistant secretary G. Koteswara Rao said on Sunday that the RTC lands turned into breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The open places were also being used for dumping the garbage. The residents of nearby localities were agitated as wild bushes had become haven for snakes. The RTC authorities were requested to take necessary steps immediately to clear the bushes and level the ground.
Either, the RTC should distribute the land to the poor and needy, or maintain it properly, he said.
Street play staged
As part of the Mental Illness Awareness Week, doctors and nursing students of the Vijayawada Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (VIMHANS) on Sunday staged a street play at Nunna village and Ranigarithota in Krishnalanka.
The event was aimed at warding off superstitions such as black magic.
The play also depicted the banes of vices like smoking and gutka, strain in spousal relationships and impact of marital discord on children. VIMHANS doctor Indla Ramasubba Reddy and psychiatrist Indla Vishal spoke at length about the ills of addiction to alcohol and other vices, growing marital discord leading to disturbances in society and several other issues related to the mental health of the people.
