The CPI district council has geared up to lay siege to the main roads at 56 different centres and paralyse the entire road network in the district on August 12 in protest against the alleged attempts by the "mining mafia" to ‘plunder' the mineral wealth of the district.
At a press conference held at the party office here on Monday, CPI national council member and MLC Puvvada Nageshwara Rao said the programme would be organised on a massive scale to mount pressure on the government to cancel the illegal mining leases in the district and prevent exploitation of the mineral wealth by vested inrerests.
“The government should explore the option of setting up an allied industry near Bayyaram under public sector to create employment avenues for local youth and general income for the State exchequer,” he said and alleged that the Dummugudem Nagarjunasagar tail pond link canal would undermine the interests of the district.
The government should shelve the project and enhance the compensation for the land oustees of Polavaram project, he demanded. CPI senior leaders including party State secretary K Narayana would participate in the agitation, he said.
CPI district secretary B Hemantha Rao, State secretariat member S Venkateshwarlu, district secretariat member P Prasad and others were present.
