The Communist Party of India (CPI) city unit took out a padayatra, walkathon, at Chalasani Nagar here on Sunday demanding that the State government provide passenger under pass (PUP) for the benefit of residents of Krishnalanka.

The padayatra was taken out in 15th and 16th divisions in the city. The residents feared that their localities would be cut off from rest of the city with ongoing development works.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar said that the residents of Chalasani Nagar, Guntur Bapanaiah Nagar, Balaji Nagar, Gita Nagar would be worst sufferers. As many as 70,000 people were residing in these localities. They were using Netaji Bridge to reach Bandar Road and other parts of the city. But, with the closure of bridge and barricading of the highway, they have to take circuitous route to reach Bandar Road, he said.

The then Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao assured that the barricades would be removed. But, nothing materialised. Vijayawada (East) MLA Gadde Ramamohan gave assurances four months ago, he said, adding, construction of PUPs would solve the problem of the residents.
