Activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Wednesday staged a dharna at Prakasam Barrage demanding modernisation of the barrage and steps to keep it safe and strong.

‘Negligent attitude'

CPI city secretary K. Subba Raju, addressing the activists, flayed the government for its “negligent attitude” towards protecting the barrage that has been irrigating nearly 13 lakh acres.

The party demanded that the State government implement the recommendations of a technical committee constituted to suggest measures to protect the barrage.

The party asked the government to remove the silt for free flow of water between the barrage and Bhavani Island. They cautioned the government about future agitations on the issue if constructive measure were not taken for the safety of the barrage.

The party leaders Palla Surya Rao, Donepudi Shankar, G. Koteswara Rao and others participated in the agitation.

The day also saw the CPI city committee launching the three-week “Praja Samasyala Parishkara Sadhana Yatra”, a programme to reach out to people to know and resolve their problems in all the 59 divisions.

“We will identify problems in three divisions every day and will take them to the notice of the officials. The yatra will continue up to August 6, Mr. Subba Raju said.

The party also condemned police firing in Sompeta of Srikakulam district. “We strongly condemn the firing incident, where four innocent persons died in the brutal act. We demand the government to announce financial assistance to the families of the deceased,” the party said in a statement.
