CPI, CPI(M) to contest jointly in civic polls

March 12, 2014 12:21 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 08:04 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party India-Marxist (CPI-M) have decided to contest jointly in municipal elections. The CPI is likely to contest in 29 divisions and CPI(M) in 21 divisions, sources say.

The leaders of both parties successfully took the discussions to a logical conclusion regarding alliance/understanding in the municipal elections, on Tuesday.

A list of divisions that will have a joint candidate in the fray will be announced on Wednesday. As an agreement is reached between them the candidates from the respective parties would withdraw from the race and support candidates of the allies.

Both CPI and CPI(M) have already announced that they would contest in 24 and 34 divisions respectively. Both Left parties have hold in majority of these divisions. So, they could not finalise the divisions that have to be contested jointly so as to bag the mayoral post. During last elections, the Left parties sailed with Congress. This time, neither CPI nor CPI(M) have plans to join hands with the Congress.

Forging alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is also being ruled out as CPI(M) is keen on having a tie-up with YSR Congress in general elections.

The understanding or alliance depends on these factors.
