CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar has alleged large-scale corruption in construction of flyovers, laying of roads and repairs conducted thereto and asserted that the situation will not be so pathetic as it is evident from the recent collapse of a portion of an under-construction flyover at Gunadala, if Vijayawada MP, MLAs and officials of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) were caring for well-being of the people.

Addressing media persons here on Friday, Mr. Sankar said many parts of the internal roads measuring 86 km in the city were in a very bad shape and not even repairs were carried out to them. Some MLAs were involved in land-grabbing and getting favours done to their followers. An MLA was responsible for the collapse of a stretch of the flyover at Gunadala by virtue of his dealings with contractors. Government lands were being encroached with ease as there was no monitoring.

Mr. Sankar said the Municipal Corporation faced paucity of funds but the MP and MLAs were least bothered with VMC’s troubles. As a consequence, people were suffering a lot due to poor sanitation and other civic amenities which were in a state of disrepair. The Government should immediately release funds due to the VMC, Mr. Sankar said.
