City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang has called upon the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and officials of various government departments to join hands to address women issues in the Commissionerate limits.

“Despite several laws and Acts, women are subjected to harassment at different places and there is no respite for them,” said the city police chief, who participated in a ‘Mahila Chaitanya Sadassu’.

The Women Wing of the Police Department, in association with the Women Development and Child Welfare, Juvenile Welfare and other departments and representatives of various NGOs, organised the programme here on Wednesday. They discussed rescue and rehabilitation of the victims and the laws and Acts to protect them.

Mr. Sawang said apart from responding to the complaints and registering cases in the police stations, police should act positively in ensurng justice to victims and provide necessary guidance in solving their problems.

“[The] Government is implementing several schemes, projects and programmes and devised effective mechanism for the implementation of the projects through various departments. Despite awareness programmes and sensitization camps, the problems of women continued and we couldn’t bring any change in the society.”

Former Rajya Sabha member Chennupati Vidya said the fairer sex should actively take part in finding solution to their problems and appealed to victims and NGOs not to depend on police and the government departments alone.

Committees soon

To solve grievances at division level, Women Bhadrata Committees would be formed at the police station level. The committee members will visit the colonies, inquire into the pre-litigation cases and try to find an amicable solution, she said. Expressing concern over the increasing atrocities against girls and women, Ms. Vidya appealed to the parents to take responsibility in shaping their wards into good citizens. She cautioned students on excessive use of social media sites.

Management consultant M.C. Das said about 70 per cent of women were being subjected to domestic violence, but only a few cases were being registered.
