One person was killed and two others, who tried to rescue the victim, sustained injuries in a road accident at Kankipadu on the city outskirts on Friday night.

The accident created a flutter as local people thought the vehicle involved in the accident belonged to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's convoy. But the police denied it.

The deceased has been identified as B. Srinivas Rao (53), a native of Kankipadu village. The vehicle hit Srinivas Rao at a high speed causing severe injuries. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The injured, Uday Kiran, is undergoing treatment in a private hospital while the third person was treated as out-patient. Vijayawada City Police Commissioner, D. Gautam Sawang told The Hindu that the multi-utility vehicle was owned by Anne Srinivas Chowdary of Uppuluru village. Some police personnel of Vijayawada engaged the four-wheeler to attend a marriage at Kaikalur.

“We are verifying if this was a vehicle hired by police and used in the convoy anytime in the past. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested. A case under Section 304-a (negligence causing death) has been registered against him,” he added. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Law and Order) L.K.V. Ranga Rao too clarified that the vehicle which caused the accident was not part of any convoy.

East Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) B. Vijay Bhaskar said the police are trying to find out the cause of the accident through CCTV footage.
