Concern over power holidays

April 29, 2013 03:09 pm | Updated 03:09 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Providing electricity to mills and factories that have several employees was the responsibility of the government. The crisis in the power production was because of privatisation, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury has said.

At the Sundaraiah birth centenary celebrations in Vijayawada on Sunday, Mr. Sitaram expressed concern over the power holidays that the industries had to suffer because of the shortage of power in the State. He wondered what would be the fate of the workers who were working in industries.

Mr. Sitaram said that only the government could provide power. Even the United States of America, which handed over power generation to the private sector, had to take it back after the huge power outages the country suffered. The government should be the main producer of power, the private sector could supplement the production, he said.

About the reports on Gujarat providing power to industrial and other sectors, Mr. Sitaram said that the claims were still to be established. The CPI(M) leader said that despite all the claims the Human Development Index of Gujarat was going worse.
