‘Combine math with literature to remove phobia’

September 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Teachers can improve students’ knowledge in mathematics by blending mathematical concepts with appealing literary elements in classroom teaching. This will drive away math phobia, says P.V. Arunachalam, former Vice-Chancellor of Dravidian University, Kuppam.

Delivering keynote address at a seminar on “Mathematics and Literature’, organised by Maris Stella College, in association with the Association for Improvement of Math Education on Tuesday, Prof. Arunachalam said mathematics is like literature.

It is like the silent language of reason, a beautiful expression of logic that makes orderly sense of the world through numbers rather than words or feelings while poetry tries to convey the meanings of things, describes states of emotion and feelings, basically the world around us, with words, he said.

Delegates from various colleges attended the session coordinated by HoD, Department of Mathematics V. Sudha Rani and HoD, PG Department of Mathematics G. Usha Kumari, Maris Stella College.
