CM cannot suppress democratic voices: NGT petitioner

Social activist Pandalaneni Srimannarayana said the jails in Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) would not have space to accommodate critics of the Government, against whom Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is contemplating legal action if they spread misinformation on the construction of Amaravati.

Addressing media persons at the Press Club here on Friday, Mr. Srimannarayana, who had filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking a halt to the Amaravati project on the ground that it is situated on flood plains and posed danger to the environment, alleged that the Government has in fact snatched about 50000 acres of land from innocent farmers, not 33000 acres as people are made to believe.

He claimed the sole intention behind his crusade was that the destruction of multi-cropped lands for the sake of construction of Amaravati would endanger food security and have other adverse consequences.

Mr. Srimannarayana alleged that he was being threatened to withdraw his petition or be prepared for imprisonment, which was an undemocratic way of responding to public criticism.
