Textile business in the district came to a standstill for sometime on Thursday as hundreds of merchants and workers took out rallies protesting against imposition of VAT.
Traders downed shutters for a couple of hours in the morning.
A rally was taken out from Tadithota to Kotagummam. Later, it reached Sub-Collector's office. Rajahmundry Wholesale Cloth Market Committee president Bommana Rajkumar, Rajahmundry Chamber of Commerce president Pokala Seethaiah and secretary M. Muralikrishna were among others who led the rally.
Representatives of cloth merchants' associations made a representation to RDO M. Venugopala Reddy. Similar rallies were taken out in Dwarapudi, Kakinada, and Amalapuram.
