The district officials undertook a surprise visit as part of drive for cleanliness and removal of unauthorised shops at the main vegetable market located at the Old Madras bus stand here on Wednesday.

Officials pulled up vendors who were not keeping their surroundings clean. They warned of action against those vendors who threw garbage along the internal walking path.

Joint Collector G. Rekharani, accompanied by the officials of the civil supplies department, made a surprise visit to the vegetable complex. She asked the officials to get all the unauthorised shops and those not maintaining cleanliness removed from the premises with immediate effect.

Hygiene matters

As the rains have started, the administration has begun efforts to ensure cleanliness in the public places so that this will help prevent outbreak of diseases in the coming days.

There have been complaints from the public regarding the poor maintenance of the vegetable market premises. Many vendors are leaving vegetable waste on the paths and open spaces in and around the market premises.

The officials were also instructed to ensure that is no water stagnation in low-lying areas in the vicinity of the market.
