The State government will conduct elections to five Municipal Corporations and seven Municipalities either in the last week of December 2016 or first week of January 2017.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu discussed the issue at the party coordination meeting here on Thursday.
The meeting decided to conduct the elections, depending on the climatic conditions, said Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana.
The corporations that would go to the polls include Visakhapatnam and Guntur.
Housing problem discussed
Mr. Narayana said that the State Cabinet also discussed the housing problem. There were 6,200 slums in 110 municipal bodies. Thirty-seven per cent of 1.43 crore urban population was living in the slums.
The government has decided to provide two types of houses to the slum- dwellers. While one type, with separate bedroom and hall, would cost Rs. 6 lakh, another type would cost Rs.5 lakh.
The second type would have hall-cum-bedroom.
For both the types, the Central and State governments would contribute Rs.1.5 lakh each.
