Vijayawada to host rating chess tourney

A four-day all India FIDE rated chess tournament will be held at Icon Public School, situated Seetharamapuram, from May 18 to 21 in which International Master from Chennai Balasubrahmanian will take part, according to Global Chess Academy chairman K. Rajendra here on Friday.

He said the tournament will be a boon to local players as they can enhance their rating by playing against rated players from different parts of the country.

“This is the first rating tournament of the year in Vijayawada. Earlier to play rating tournaments players and parents used to visit cities by spending huge money. Now the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association is making efforts bring in more number of rated events for the benefit of the players,” said Sk. Khasim, chief coach of Global Chess Academy.

Prize money

The event offers prize money of Rs. 1 lakh and special prizes for age group winners in under-7, 9, 11 and 13 segments. “The winner will carry home Rs. 20,000 along with a trophy. For the second and third place we will be giving Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively. The entry fee is Rs. 500.

Icon Public School, which is the sponsor, is providing free dormitory accommodation for all out station players. “More than 100 players have given their consent to play. There will be eight rounds and everyday we will have two rounds,” Mr. Khasim added.
