In an attempt to curb road accidents, the City Police have launched a massive drive against drunken driving.
The police are testing vehicle riders with breath analysers at various points during night hours. In all, 126 persons have been produced in the court on the charge of driving in inebriated condition so far. City Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao said the drive aimed at controlling drunken driving, which would help prevent road accidents in a big way. As many as 26 teams have been formed to check various traffic violations including driving vehicles without licenses, insurance, pollution, triple riding, driving while talking on phone, checking under-age driving. “During check, the teams seized 126 vehicles and produced their owners in the court. The court awarded jail to 19 persons, besides imposing Rs. 2,000 penalty each. The police commissioner appealed people not to drive vehicle under the influence of alcohol . The special drive will continue and traffic violators would be dealt seriously, he warned.
“Vehicle riders are requested to carry the original or the photocopies of registration, insurance, pollution and other documents and cooperate with the police. The objective of checking the documents is to prevent thefts,” Mr. Rao clarified.
Besides drunken driving, about 750 persons were booked on various charges and the police collected nearly Rs. 5.25 lakh as penalties from them.
