City-based physician G. Samaram has been bestowed with ‘Med Achievers’ Award’ by Indian Medical Association.

The award was presented to Mr. Samaram at a glitter function held at hotel Taj in New Delhi on July 1 by Union Health Minister Harshwardhan.

Instituted recently, the awards are being given for the first time and 22 doctors from different disciplines have been selected from across the country for their outstanding services in their respective fields.

Addressing a meeting organised in this connection, the Minister said the award-winning medical professionals had set an example for others to follow. Serving the mankind in the best possible way, they were the ‘real heroes’, he said.

Speaking against commercialisation of medical services, the Minister said doctors were in a noble profession and therefore, must adhere to the ethics of their profession.

Dr. Samaram is the son of freedom fighter and social reformer Gora who waged a relentless war against social evils like social inequality and superstition. Following his father’s footsteps, Dr. Samaram used medical science to create awareness among people at the grass root level in remote villages across the State of Andhra Pradesh to ward of superstition.

The ‘Med Achievers’ Award is yet another feather in his crowded cap of several honours bestowed upon him in the past.
