CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said here on Thursday that the BJP and the TDP turned a blind eye to the problems being faced by women on all fronts.

She was addressing a seminar on ‘Government policies and their impact on women’ organised by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) at Ukkunagaram.

Ms. Karat alleged that the State government was allowing the sale of liquor without any control, and it was one of the prime factors that would lead to domestic violence.

She said the Supreme Court had banned liquor sale within a radius of 500 metres from National Highways. Instead of cancelling the licence of the liquor shops, many found their way into residential areas, she said.

Ms. Karat asked the government to initiate concrete measures to cancel the licence of liquor shops on the highways immediately.

Gender sensitisation

Referring to the growing atrocities against women, she stated that gender sensitisation should begin at home and parents should take enough care to instil confidence in their children, educate them on their rights, and allow them to develop questioning skills.

The seminar was attended by AIDWA State president B. Prabhavathi, city secretary R.N. Madhavi, and city division secretary K. Venu.
